2001 SUMMIT E.T. FINALS
EVENT OVERVIEW
Firebird Raceway – Boise, Idaho
The countdown is well underway for the 2001 Summit E.T. Finals, which will be hosted at Firebird Raceway northwest of Idaho’s capital city of Boise on September 6th-9th. Please find attached an overview of payouts, gate times, entry fees, etc. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to give us a call.
We at Firebird are very excited to be hosting the Division 6 Team Finals for the third time dating back to its inception in 1977 this coming September. In addition to all the great racing that will be taking place during the Finals, we will also be resurrecting the famed "Olympics of Drag Racing" on Friday evening following the conclusion of time trials. For those who may not have experienced this often zany and quite funny team competition—you are in for quite a treat. For those who participated in the `96 Games, you have no doubt started saving up your energy for this true Idaho "original". So that we don’t give too many details away to this extraordinary happening let’s just simply say, new Division 6 Director Mike Rice has been appointed to the official umpire chair, one of the most sought after roles in team Olympic competition. All we can say is—step aside Salt Lake City, "cause here comes the Firebird Olympics this September!"
How to find Firebird (should this be your first journey to our western Idaho facility)…coming from Oregon on I-84, take the Middleton Exit (#25) and turn left on Hwy 44. You’ll pass thru the towns of Middleton and Star before turning left (north) on Hwy 16. Continue on Hwy 16 for 5 miles and you will see the track on the left hand side of the Highway. Coming from Boise on I-84, take I-84 to the Eagle Exit (#46) and turn north on Eagle Road. You’ll follow this road down to Hwy 44 and turn left. Drive 5 more miles to Hwy 16 and turn right (north). The track is 5 miles down Hwy 16 on your left hand side. Follow new State Highway directional signage (brown & white arrow signs) to Firebird at major intersections.

WEEKEND RUN ORDER
Friday

Saturday

TEAM STRUCTURE AND RULES
Each participating team is allowed a total of 54 entries: regardless of category, 2 High School, and 4 Jr.
Dragsters. Team members must have competed in a minimum of one (1) E.T. Series event at the track
he/she represents. Race of Champions representatives must have competed in at least one-half (50%) of
his/her track’s E.T. Series events in 2001. Anyone not meeting the required quota of events will not be
permitted to compete. Anyone participating in the E.T. Finals must have a NHRA number.
TEAM LIST
To assist in our preparations for everything from our pit layout to the Saturday night feed, we would certainly appreciate each team letting us know one week prior to the E.T. Finals of what your anticipated team count will be.
A TOTAL OF 7 ELIMATOR CATEGORTIES ARE CONTESTED
Super Pro 7.50 – 11.99 alt. corrected to 12.40 (open top bulb, electronics permitted)
Pro 7.50 – 13.99 alt. corrected to 14.40 (no electronics)
Sportsman 13.00 & Slower (no electronics)
Pro Snow/Bike 7.50 – 14.99 (Split Tree, option of.5 Full or .4 Pro (P placed after dial-in required during eliminations-flashing dash on scoreboard designates pro tree)
High School 11.00 & Slower (no electronics)
Jr. Dragster Lightning 7.90 – 12.00 (*see Junior Dragster paragraph)
Jr. Dragster Thunder 11.00 & Slower (**see Junior Dragster paragraph)
All categories are five-tenths (except Pro Snow/Bike, which offers a split tree) full tree with optional staging. Any competitor who deep stages assumes the risk, and are not permitted to write DEEP on the windows. The starter assumes no responsibility. At this event, passengers are not allowed in any category. All categories will be staged under the parameters of the Compulink AutoStart tree activation system.
DIAL DOWN ALLOWANCE
Considering Firebird is an altitude facility (2,700’ above sea level), Super Pro and Pro racers will be permitted to dial up to 0.4 of a second slower for altitude. Sportsman eliminator is 13.00 and slower (due to Firebird’s altitude, no dial down allowance in Sportsman).
PAIRING AND LANE ASSIGNMENTS
All classes will be called to the lanes by session. Each team will be called to lanes separately throughout time trials. During eliminations a random draw will be made to see which teams will compete against each other for that round of racing. Every attempt will be made to keep team members from racing one another.
Potential singles in eliminations will be awarded to the competitor with the best reaction time on a
winning run from the previous round. This process will be repeated for every round of eliminations. First
round singles will be determined from the last time trial session; clean-up sessions do not count.
DIAL – INS
Each racer is responsible for checking to see that his/her dial-in is correct before staging. There will be no
reruns due to incorrect dial-ins.
EXTENDED TECH INSPECTION (ETI)
Drivers who maintain a current NHRA Extended Tech Inspection and have their ETI paperwork will not need to bring their cars to the tech area for inspection. NHRA Tech Officials will make house calls to your pit to verify that your paperwork is valid and all your have to do is go to the NHRA Trailer to turn in your completed tech card. If your entry has not gone through an ETI, then tech will take place for all non-ETI entries in the tech inspection area in front of the Firebird Sport Shop approximately 30 minutes prior to the first designated time trial run of the weekend.
NHRA PERMANENT NUMBERS
All event participants must have a valid E.T. Number to compete at this event (SC, SG, SST, etc. numbers are not valid). Permanent numbers will be sold all day Thursday and from 8-10 am on Friday and Saturday. Prior to passing tech, you are required to have an NHRA Number. Racers in Super Pro, Pro, Pro Snow/Bike and Junior Dragster are required to have either vinyl or painted numbers on your entry for the 2001 E.T. Finals. We strongly encourage Sportsman competitors to follow suit, as this will significantly improve the appearance of your entry and more importantly ease the readability and accuracy of your number from the tower.
ANTI-FREEZE
Firebird does not permit the use of anti freeze in any entry 14.00 or quicker. For cars slower than this, we highly encourage you to avoid the use of anti freeze in the cooling system of your entry.
TEAM POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP
Each participating team will be awarded one point per round win in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and
Pro Snow/Bike during Sunday’s eliminations. The team with the highest points at the end of
Sunday’s competition will be awarded the Division Six Team Championship and each member will
receive a jacket from NHRA/Summit Racing at the 2001 NHRA Division 6 Awards Banquet.
SUMMIT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AT POMONA
For the second consecutive year, an NHRA National Champion for bracket racing will be crowned at the L.A. County Fairplex in Pomona. The winners of the Race of Champions runoff on Saturday will be awarded the opportunity to travel and compete against the other six Division Champions in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle (Div. 6: Pro Snow/Bike) on November 7-11, 2001.
Each Divisional Champion will receive a check for $3,500 (which will be awarded in California) to assist with your travel expenses. Each winner will be awarded $5,000 and will become the Summit Bracket World Champion. Without question, it is one of the most significant awards and accomplishments in the sport of NHRA Drag Racing.
TEAM DESIGNATOR CODES
Note to All Teams: Each Racer on your team needs to have a designator (preferably a decal with your team
"code/letter" on the driver’s side of the front windshield. This will significantly help in the staging lanes to
keep one team from racing another team member—especially in the late rounds of competition.

Due to tower limitations (limited amount of room) only one Team Captain will be permitted in the tower should a question arise. Any questions, suggestions, etc. should be made through your Team Captain.
CANADIAN CUP RETURNS
A true Firebird original, we will resurrect the famed Canadian Cup, which will be awarded to the highest finishing team from Canada. This special award will be presented to the Canadian team who accumulates the largest point total during Sunday’s final day of racing.
OLYMPICS – FRIDAY EVENING
Adding a unique element to this year’s Summit E.T. Finals will be return of the Firebird "Olympics of Team Racing". Several intriguing Games will be contested for all participating Division 6 tracks. New for 2001—all teams are requested to come up with an original team name (tied with track name)…i.e.—Woodburn Raiders, Lost Creek Guzzlers, Mission Tigers, Madras Chargers, Portland Confederates …remember this is a family affair when selecting names. Participants: 18 years of age or older, may be a racer, crew member, track official—track general managers highly encouraged to take key roles on each team. Defending Firebird Olympics Champions: Team P.I.R.
CONTINGENCY AWARDS
Contingency decals are important. Decals must be on the competition vehicle prior to the first round of competition and must remain on the competition vehicle throughout elimnations. Please understand that it is the responsibility of the racer to acquire decals from the posting sponsor. Each winner and runner-up will be teched by a NHRA Tech Official immediately following the final round. Winners and runner-up will also be responsible for completing the Summit Racing E.T. Finals Contingency Form.
HIGH SCHOOL ELIMINATOR
The High School class is open to any student that has attended school during the current calendar year as a full-time student. Racers will compete during Saturday’s Race of Champions. High School racers are allowed to earn points for their respective teams. Racers in this class may not dial quicker than 11.00 seconds. Pairings are determined by random drawing. Teammates will not race each other in the first round. The High School champion and runner-up will receive a tool box and tools at the Division 6 banquet. In addition the High School champion will receive two banquet tickets and will receive their NHRA trophy, championship jacket and Gold Card at the banquet. High School participants are also eligible to compete in Sunday’s eliminations in either Pro or Sportsman at no additional fee. The High School entry fee is $25.
JR. DRAGSTERS
Jr. Dragster competition will be conducted solely on Saturday. No time trials for Jr. Dragsters on Friday. Jr. Dragster competitors will receive two (2) time trials on Saturday prior to eliminations. Each track may send four (4) Jr. Dragsters to the E.T. Finals and they will earn points for their teams during Saturday’s Challenge race. There will be two classes for the Jr. Dragsters: Jr. Lightning (7.90 – 12.00) and Jr. Thunder (11.00 & Slower). **Thunder is open to Junior drivers with 3 years or less experience (4 years of racing experience or greater-required to run Lightning). Each class winner will receive a Wally, a jacket, a Gold Card and two tickets the banquet. The two class winners will compete in a King/Queen of the hill with the champion earning #61 and the runner-up #62 for the 2002 season.
*Due to Firebird’s high-altitude location (2,700’ above sea level), the following e.t. parameters will be established for any and all events conducted at our facility. Please take note and plan to comply with the following Firebird policies during the Summit E.T. Finals regarding the e.t. your car will run .
Ages 13, 14 or 15 ("Intermediate" Advanced 8.50-Up); dial-in restricted to 8.50 seconds or slower at any event. Any racer running quicker than 8.40 e.t. at any time during an event will receive one warning. If the same racer runs quicker than 8.40 e.t. again at the same event, car & driver will be disqualified for the remainder of the event. Any racer running quicker than 8.30 e.t. at any time during an event will be immediately disqualified for the remainder of the event. The above penalties will be imposed regardless of whether the infraction(s) occur during time trials or eliminations. Minimum of one "full year" of Junior driving experience required before permission is granted to run quicker than 8.90 for these age parameters.
Age 15 to 17 (Advanced 7.90-Up); dial-in restricted 7.90 seconds or slower at any event. Valid State Driver’s License required to run at this Advanced level. Any racer running quicker than 7.90 e.t. or faster than 85 m.p.h. at any time during an event will be disqualified from the event.
FIREBIRD "CODE OF CONDUCT"…In an effort to maintain our Racer’s Code of Conduct and provide equality and consistency amongst all Jr. Dragster participants and teams, the following staging policy is in effect at all Firebird events.
- Only one parent or crewmember can assist with the entry once the vehicle has left the head of the staging area and proceeded into the burnout area. Other parent or crewmembers must stay off the pads well behind the realm of the starting line area, preferably behind the guardwall in the staging lanes, since junior racers are driving around the staging lanes to approach the start line (to keep this area clear for safety reasons). Remember to keep your eyes/vision on the car in front and especially those cars coming up behind you. If you are caught just looking down the track and not paying attention to what is coming up behind you, a penalty can be enforced with your Junior—loss of a time run. In addition, crew members are not allowed to put their feet, legs, hands, etc. near the front/rear wheels of a Junior entry as it slows down from a burnout or as it is approaching the starting line. Take note: Safety—first and foremost in and around the starting line.
- A Parent or crewmember may assist with the staging process until the car is in the blue stripe zone (staging zone several inches before the pre-stage light) at which time the parent or crewmember must reposition themselves off the pads and behind an imaginary line extending across the track directly behind the rear wheels of the Jr. Dragster.
JUNIOR "ACCIDENTAL" DEEP STAGING POLICY
- During time trials/qualifying: If an accidental deep stage should occur during time trials, the parent/crewperson (with approval from the starter) may pull the car back into stage beam one time. The parent/crewperson must perform this action in a quick manner so as not to delay the staging process nor cause confusion to their opponent.
- During eliminations: If an accidental deep stage should occur during eliminations, the parent/crewperson is not allowed to approach nor reposition the vehicle. The vehicle must accept their current position on the pads and the driver keep focused on the tree and be prepared to race.
Always remember Firebird’s "Code of Conduct", which emphasizes several positive points to keep in mind when participating at our events. Our "top ten" items include: 1-Encouraging all youth to participate in sports, but avoid putting pressure on them. 2-Keep winning in perspective, but also help others do the same. 3-Make only positive, encouraging comments to all participants and officials. 4-Applaud good races and good effort by your own team as well as those of your piers and opponents. 5-Control your emotions. 6-Remember, making mistakes are part of the learning process-criticism may be counterproductive. 7-Focus on the fun and participation versus just winning and losing. 8-Encourage all participants to play by the rules. 9-Develop good sportsmanship and a desire to strive for success (i.e.-improving skills, reaching new heights, etc.). 10-Thank participants, officials, family members and others who help with the events.
Additionally, remember that this is a learning experience, too, filled with a number of different elements ranging from mathematics to science, so learn to apply those educational topics into your Junior racing program each season.
Bottom-line, lets have fun as the Division 6 Junior Championships are conducted at Firebird Raceway in September. The Jr. Dragster Entry Fee is $25.
ALTERNATES
Alternates or extra racers above and beyond the original 54 racers are not allowed to purchase an extra tech card to make time runs this year. Should a qualified racer break their entry during the course of Thursday’s test `n tune or time trials (and is pulled from your roster), you may place a "qualified alternate" (i.e.-a driver who meet the E.T. Finals criteria—having competed at a minimum of 1 point’s race at your track) into the field. There is no guarantee of a time run should the rotation for the alternate’s class be completed and your racer may be subject to dialing cold. No refunds will be made at this year’s E.T. Finals.
NATIONAL DRAGSTER SPIRIT AWARD
Will be awarded to first, second and third place as determined by the NHRA Certification Team. The criteria is as follows: 1) Pit area organization, 2) Overall conduct in grandstands, pits, staging, turn around, etc., 3) Team display in grandstands and pit area. Use of mechanical or electric noise or volume enhancing devices is prohibited. This award is presented to the winning team at the 2001 NHRA Division 6 Awards Banquet.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE POLICY
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES...Under Idaho Code (#23-1023 & #23-1056), no alcoholic beverages may be brought into this licensed facility. Should you as the driver/owner or crew member(s) be caught bringing alcohol into Firebird either before, during or after an event, you will be subject to disqualification from the event and all winnings retracted from the "team" involved with this very rigid state policy. Under penalty of the law, this mandate will be strictly enforced at Firebird. This is not an issue to be taken lightly due to Idaho State Law governing a licensed facility like Firebird.
SPECIAL AWARDS
Division 6 also awards Best Appearing Car, Best Engineered and Best Appearing Jr. Dragster as determined by the NHRA Certification Team. These awards will be presented during Sunday’s awards ceremony at the track.
RESTRICTED PIT TRANSPORTATION IN STAGING LANES
Due to the unique nature of the Firebird Staging Lanes, all pit transportation will be required to be parked at the beginning of the staging lanes to keep access open in the fire lane. Note: Snowmobile competitors racing in Pro Snow/Bike are required to be towed into the staging lanes until you fire-up for competition before pulling around to the starting line.
SATURDAY’S RACE OF CHAMPIONS – TRACK CHALLENGE CUP
Each participating team may field four (4) entries in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle/Snowmobile and Jr. Dragster as well as two (2) entries in High School for the Race of Champions. Each team will be awarded one point per round won during Saturday’s Race of Champions eliminations. The track with the highest point total at the end of Saturday’s competition will be awarded the Division 6 Track Challenge Cup (essentially a "race within the race" for first-day bragging rights).
