2008 PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

 BRACKET RACING NEWS

Welcome to the unofficial (but sort of official) Portland International Raceway Bracket Racing site! The focus of this site will remain as it has for the past eight years – as a source to keep you updated on the Bracket Racing program at PIR. I'll leave the street legal races, import races, etc. up to someone else.  While this remains a volunteer deal, as with all previous seasons I’ll do my best to keep the race results and current point standings posted within 24 hours of receiving them.  I will also continue to submit these results to National Dragster. As with the past couple of years, I will leave the picture pages up to you - the racers running for points at PIR to submit.

If you have any information, news, comments or concerns regarding Bracket Racing at Portland International Raceway that you would like to have posted here, just send an e-mail to:

Please note there have been a couple of revisions made to the schedule – most notably the points ending date for all categories has been changed from August 20th to August 13th.

Due to the Champ Car race no longer on the 2008 PIR schedule – but still with some possible conflicts with the Star Mazda race now in its place, at this point, Wednesday July 23rd remains a tentative bracket racing night.  Check back here for details - I’ll post them as soon as they become available.  There have also been a few changes to the Jr Dragster race dates – as well as for High School and Sport Compact.  See the schedule page for full details.

Jr. Dragster Notice / Reminder

Due to the rainout of the first scheduled points race on March 26, the first Jr. Dragster points race has been rescheduled for Wed. April 9.  In the event that race is rained out, points will begin on the 16th and will follow the regular schedule from that point on.

Woo-Hoo!  The 2008 season has started!

Even though the new season has started, it’s not too late to let us know your 2008 plans……

Our latest  Racer Update comes from the Masterman camp.  John writes:

The Camaro is progressing nicely. As usual, it didn't seem like anything
would be necessary engine-wise. And once again, I was reminded of why I tear
it apart anyway. The top of one valve guide had broken off, and was rattling around on
the valve stem. Lovely. So, everything got freshened up. Heads freshened up and new
exhaust valves, block honed, new rings and bearings (insert plug for Paolo Engine
Service).  Oh, the cam was coming apart. New cam (insert plug for Oregon Cam Grinding).
It was finally time to give some love to the very abused transmission in the Camaro.
After better than eight years of abuse, it was finally time to replace some
internals: Second gear, third gear, both collars, both hubs, both forks, and all the bearings.
I really have to hand it to Chrysler for their design and durability on the A-833.
GM could only hope to have ever made something that could hold up to as
much abuse as this thing does. Life has been good since I ended up with a
drivetrain that matches up with a 60's hemi car.  A-833 tranny and Dana 60 rear.
Things don't break anymore (not counting spider gears, of course...)

JANUARY 14, 2008

Racer Update.  Carol Brown gives us this update on Bob’s plans for the 2008 season:

“Bob bought a 1970 RS Z28 Camaro project car from a guy he knows.  It had been in his
shop and he just didn't have time to finish it, so he asked Bob if he wanted to
buy it and finish it.  It has all or most of the parts, plus some extras.
It basically needs to be assembled, paint, plus it needs a motor and tranny, and all of that.
He was going to pull the motor and tranny out of the 1986 race car Camaro he
built last season, but he's checking with the pastor of our church to see if we have some
high schoolers who want to race it this season, so depending on if that happens, the motor
and tranny will stay in the race Camaro (the 1986) until the racing season is done, and
then get pulled out to go into the 1970 Camaro..”

JANUARY 9, 2008

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the 2007 PIR Awards Banquet, but thanks to Carol Brown, pictures are available at her web site!  Looks like a fun time was had by all – wish I could have been there…..

If you are looking for some great bargains to get your car ready for the 2008 season, you’ll be sure to want to check out the 32nd Annual N.W.D.R.A. Hi-Performance Swap Meet on the 20th.

For more information as well as a downloadable entry form, check out the N.W.D.R.A web site

After you’ve scored those bargains, be sure to send ME a Racer Update.  The first one of the year comes from John Masterman.  John reports the Buick has received a new narrower rear.  In addition to beefier preload springs to eliminate that pesky “One-tire-burnout-when-it-hits-a-dry-spot-in-the-burnout-box” problem, it should eliminate the tire rub problem when transporting all the racy stuff to and from the track.  As for the Camaro, John reports it is currently “Keeping a part of the street from getting hit directly with rainfall” – look for a Camaro update in a month or so…..

JANUARY 7, 2008

Happy New Year everybody!  We’re back for another round!

As always for this time of the year, this section welcomes all PIR points racers new season plans / updates (new car, class, engine update, new sponsors, etc., etc.).  Just send them to ME and I'll post it here in the News section. When submitting, please use the subject "Racer Update" and if possible, please try to keep the photo sizes under 300KB - and in jpeg format.

I'll have some more stuff to add here in the next few days and I'll post the 2008 schedule just as soon as I receive.
