CART
In 1984 Portland joined sixteen other cities to host a CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) race. As part of the Portland Rose Festival, the "Race for the roses", was an immediate success. Although before the race could be run, CART required the modifications to the track as covered on PAGE 1. For the first two years, the event was held as the "Stroh's/G.I. Joe's 200". Replaced in 1986 as the "Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200". And in 2000, the "Freightliner/G.I. Joe's 200 presented by Texaco".
To improve access to the infield pit area, in 1985, the B.F. Goodrich (now Good Year) pedestrian bridge was built over the main straight.
